The effect of banning avoparcin on VRE carriage in The Netherlands

Sir,
Acquired resistance against antibiotics is closely related to the amount of drug used, a fact observed ever since these agents were introduced into human and veterinary medicine. However, the rate of development of resistance appears to have accelerated in the past decade. In animals, antibiotics are not only used for therapy and prevention of bacterial infections, but are also added to animal feed to act as growth promoters.
