Preface
Invasive fungal infections are a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in critically ill and immunosuppressed patients. Further, although several new antifungal drugs have been introduced in recent years, infections in some patients remain difficult to treat. The publication of this Supplement, which stems from papers presented at a symposium held at the Spring Meeting of the British Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy in 2007, reflects the increasing recognition of the clinical importance of fungal infections in hospitalized patients.
The management of serious fungal infections requires a multidisciplinary approach, as a range of factors can influence clinical outcomes. In particular, recent data have highlighted the positive association between initiation of adequate empirical therapy and a significant reduction in mortality. Much of the information presented in this Supplement addresses issues that influence patient management, including the type of infection, the clinical setting, the role of the microbiology laboratory with regard to identification and susceptibility testing, and current and future treatment options. We hope that the range of topics covered and their complementary nature will make this Supplement a valuable resource for microbiologists and clinicians alike and that it will contribute to ongoing improvement in the management of patients with fungal infections.
