The activity of nitro-compounds against Bacteroides fragilis is related to their electron affinity

Alan V. Reynolds

Microbiology Section, Department of Pharmaceutics, School of Pharmacy, The University of London 29-39 Brunswick Square. London WCIN 1AX, England

accepted 13 March 1981

The in-vitro activity of 30 nitro-compounds was tested against Bacteroides fragilis NCTC 9343. The results using 24 drugs correlated with their electron affinities (r = 0·8086) and fitted the equation:

—Log10 C=0·190–(6·35 ± 0·99)E

where C is the MIC in mmol/I, and E is the one-electron reduction potential in volts.

It was found that when partition coefficient terms were included, the correlation was not improved. Possible explanations for the results with six compounds that did not fit this relationship are also discussed.
