Cerebrospinal fluid concentrations of ampicillin in listeric meningitis
Department of Infectious Diseases, University of Göteborg, The East Hospital Göteborg The Central Hospital Uddevalla, Sweden
accepted 31 October 1978
In 5 patients with successfully treated listeric meningitis the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) concentration of ampicillin was correlated to serum levels, renal function and degree of meningeal inflammation. About 40 min after intravenous administration of ampicillin (50 to 60 mg per kg body weight) the CSF concentration ranged between 5 to 8 mg/l in 4 of the cases, which means a CSF/serum ratio of 3 to 5%. In the fifth case a 72-year-old man with renal insufficiency and a severe meningitis, extremely high CSF levels of ampicillin (60 to 130 mg/1), indicating a CSF/serum ratio of 40 to 87%, was observed.
